Keeping Up with Comedy's Rising Stars

May 22, 2018

You've probably heard about this by now, and if you haven't then I'm delighted to deliver the scoop on one of West Side Comedy Club's latest additions: F Comedy Club by Felicia Madison. Happening monthly on Tuesday nights, F Comedy Club showcases some of the most talented up and coming comedians sprinkled with a few comedy veterans as well as surprise drop-ins from the likes of comics you've regularly watched on television. Last week, I attended the show and I was not disappointed.

Very well orchestrated and smoothly run, Felicia Madison kicked off the show on time as the host of the evening captivating the audience with her amicable energy. She used seamless crowd...

Big congratulations to Stellar Alum, Neko White! His standup was recently featured on Kevin Hart's, very popular, Laugh Out Loud (LOL) Network from a set he did over the summer during the iconic festival in Montreal. LOL is a relatively new specially-curated global platform for the current generation of comedians as well as original comedic content- producing dope new comedy on a daily basis. So, it makes sense why comedic powerhouse Neko White made his way onto this platform.

True to brand, White bodied the stage with clever and witty, topical material drenched in his own perspective. From playfully dissing Canadians right to their faces to jokes about Caitlin J...

Making a New Year Resolution is a tradition followed by the masses. Some people fully intend to keep their word and work on achieving their goals while others merely write down a list of, well... hopeful wishes. Of course comedians have a way of making everything a little more interesting and downright hilarious. Here's a list of the top 7 declarations as posted by some of our favorite comics in town.

 7. Alex Barnett and his awesome parenting.

While this isn't necessarily a "resolution" per se, it's a hilarious depiction of how he spent his New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Perhaps it's also an active declaration of the sacrifices he's prepared to continue to make through...

Less than a month ago, up and coming comedian, Lev Fer released his first annual time capsule style micro documentary LEV FER 20. A series that will release a single episode every year on his birthday. As promised, Fer released the premiere episode of the annual series on December 15th, and within minutes it already had hundreds of views. A blatant reflection of the marketing done beforehand on his part as the anticipation was clearly there. But... did the film live up to the hype/expectation?

Careful not to give away too many details about the content prior to its release in both his Stellar interview and the very discreet micro trailer, Fer managed to capture twelve mi...

Ian Lara is one of the hottest up and coming comedians in the industry right now and we got a chance to sit down and catch up with him about his experiences as a traveling comic and comedian overall.

How long have you been doing comedy?

I've been doing comedy for 5.5 years. I officially started doing it a week after I graduated college but the summer before my senior year, I had started doing open mics and bringer shows. After that I thought- I'm either going to go straight to law school after I graduate or I'm going to try and become a comedian.

And what made you know that comedy was it?

To be honest, I love comedy and I love performing but I was a little unsure at...

I Am Maurice is a drama about a Haitian immigrant named Maurice (played by Wil Sylvince), who travels to the United States shortly after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to pursue his dream of becoming a professional boxer.

Directed by Jerry LaMothe (Blackout, Nora's Hair Salon, and The Tombs), I Am Maurice was co-written by comedic powerhouse Wil Slyvince along with his writing/producing partner, Bryan Kennedy. The trio joined forces to bring this unique tale to light. Armed with the conviction to create a film that tells their story and to maintain full creative control, they created a Kickstarter campaign in order to raise enough funds to bring this film to the b...

Sometimes... when you gotta go, you gotta go. And, sometimes that even means you have to... Poop in public.

The worst part about pooping in public is, well, the public. If everyone could just be non-existent for those 5-10 minutes… that’d be great. But since that's not the case- here's a simple etiquette list that will help make the experience... less awkward.

1. If there are other stalls open, do NOT choose the stall closest to the pooper.

One would think this is the obvious course of action.  The people who do this are arguably worse than the people who choose to sit right next to you on a bus/train full of empty seats. When you do this, you force the pooper next to you to...

Mark Benjamin is quite possibly, a comedic genius.  His timing, delivery, and content stays consistent as he pulls the audience into his world of humor.  A world, that they have no idea how much they are about to enjoy.  Upon introduction, he graces the stage sporting a casual and calm demeanor, which later induces the realization that it was nothing short of being- the quiet before the storm.  Equipped with an arsenal of jokes, Benjamin is as relentless with his punchlines as the audience is with their reactive belts of laughter throughout his performance.

Benjamin’s matter-of-fact approach to observational humor makes you feel like you’re simply having a f...

What people may not know about Von Decarlo is that she’s been in and around the comedy scene since the early millennium. Whether it’s been writing, acting, or stand up- one thing is for certain, Von hasn’t stopped working, and for the past few years she’s made up her mind to specifically focus on perfecting her craft and first love: Stand Up Comedy. I got a chance to catch up with her and watch her perform at The Village Lantern during a show she co-hosts called School Days, a unique comedy/trivia show that features some of the best comics in town every last Thursday of the month.

Her performance was energetic and doused with bits of political humor, witty analogies, and...

Clever, witty, and sarcastic were the first words that came to mind when I watched Jennie Sutton perform last week at Hey Gals! a monthly show produced at The Pit. Sutton, who rocks her signature dark framed glasses, comes off as slightly monotone, dryly animated, and severely honest. Which, humorously, inspired my second thought- "Is she the grown up version of Tina from Bob's Burgers??" and just like Tina, Sutton quickly became one of my favorites.

Sutton sets a tone that has the audience expecting self deprecation but by the end of her punchlines, you realize she is a woman who is totally comfortable with who she is and totally okay with findin...
