Keeping Up with Comedy's Rising Stars

April 3, 2018

This monthly showcase of some absolutely brilliant comedic talent may take its name from the two hosts, Stephon Bishop and Ashley King, but it also happens to be where some truly great stand up comedians are currently being stashed for your perusal every last Wednesday of each month. STASH can be found tucked away in the intimate basement of a Caribbean restaurant in Brooklyn, BK9, with the energy and talent of a show several times its size. The March show celebrating the two year anniversary was no exception.

In honor of Women’s History Month (yeah, that’s right, March was Women’s History Month, how did YOU celebrate?), STASH featured an impressive lineup of some of the m...

There are two ways to experience the podcast recently put out by Asian American comedians Fumi Abe and Mic Nguyen. If you happen to be of Asian heritage yourself, then you may feel a certain wave of familiarity wash over you as Abe and Nguyen regale you with their anecdotes, insights, and social commentary. If, on the other hand, you happen to identify with any other racial background, you'll instead find yourself chuckling along as you inadvertently enroll in a course on the Asian American experience that you never realized you needed to take.

In the Asian, Not Asian Podcast, Abe and Nguyen discuss, as they eloquently put it, the "American issues no Americans seem to care...

Lev Fer is a busy man. Including, of course, a steady stream of stand up around the city. I got a chance to see him this past week at The Stand, where Aaron Berg hosts a free weekly show called Frantic! Despite its name, Frantic! is a comedy show boasting some seriously cool and collected talent, including the illustrious Nikki Glaser and seasoned musician and comedy veteran, Dean Delray.

It's always compelling to see how a relative new-comer such as Fer will stack up next to his more polished peers, and in this case, he very clearly held his own. It was certainly a confident group of comedians that took the stage that night, but luckily for Fer, confidence is someth...

Everyone's favorite Bengali-American comedian is currently traveling around India, so let's take a moment to speculate wildly about the transformative experiences he is surely undergoing at this very moment. Usama Siddiquee, who you may recall from our recent review, is touring Mumbai and Delhi in what we can only assume is a deeply spiritual quest for total enlightenment (at least based on ideas drawn from my overly Westernized imagination).

By enthusiastically and not at all creepily scouring his social media, I have ascertained that he has not only found the beautiful and somewhat romantic bond between a man and his anti-diarrhea medicine, but is also soaking in the loc...

Emma Willmann is constantly being compared to another notable lesbian comedian who she may resemble, but she is very much her own brand, thank you very much. In fact, Willmann is one of New York's fastest rising comic talents, and when you watch her perform it is easy to see why. While she may be from a small town in Maine, Willmann has spent the last two years taking the New York comedy scene by storm. From her debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, to her countless stand up shows at the NY Comedy Cellar and other notable clubs, a sold out show in the New York Comedy Festival, being featured on the cover of Time Out New York as one of the 10 Funniest Women in New Y...

The world is abuzz with praise for Marvel's newest (and many are arguing best) addition to their Avengers franchise, Black Panther- which ranked as the number one movie in the world for two weeks in a row!

And while reviews from critics everywhere are flooding the internet, the meme machine is also hard at work pumping out some creative and at times downright philosophical commentary on the subject.

Spoilers without Context. If you haven't actually made it to see Black Panther yet (and really, it's worth it even at midtown Manhattan prices, just go already), you probably don't want to hear too many references. In the spirit of online etiquette, meme creators have embraced...

At first glance, Abby Rosenquist appears to be your average, mild mannered girl next door type. As she takes the stage dressed in casual attire, with a sweet smile and cherubic face, you might expect her to lay out some clean, light-hearted jokes. You'll quickly find that this is not the case however, as Abby lets loose an array of clever yet dark quips that leave you laughing as you ask, “...was that a joke about miscarriage?” This visual misdirection matches Rosenquist's comedic style, with cleverly twisted punchlines that have the audience laughing at each unexpected turn. The art of misdirection is a classic comedy technique, and Rosenquist seems to have a tight grip...

Ah yes, it's everyone's favorite holiday, when love is in the air! Well, maybe it's not in your air, but surely you wouldn't let a little thing like being single ruin this fun and completely over-hyped holiday for you? Sure, you may not have anyone to buy overpriced chocolates for, or squeeze into a crowded restaurant with, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't let the sweet romance of the day fill your sad, bitter heart. So whether you've been single for a depressingly long time, or are in the process of going through a painful gut-wrenching break-up, here are some sure-fire ways to embrace this totally commercialized delight of a holiday:

Spend time with other si...

Well folks, the results are in, and the winner of the Red Mic Battle is... Everyone!  Really, including all of us in the audience lucky enough to catch the first in what I can only hope is a long line of similarly delightful performances. Produced by the talented team at Comedians on the loose, the Red Mic Battle is a contest of comedic prowess that is as entertaining as it is creative. Comprised of three rounds, the battle allows each of the two teams to show off their skills individually and together, with the audience voting after the completion of each round. This format is not only a fun and refreshing take on talent competitions and roasts, but truly showcases the c...

Perhaps you are unaware, but Alex Barnett and his wife Camille are one of the world's most adorable interracial couples. (If you are unfamiliar with Alex Barnett, a.k.a. The Multiracial Family Man, please feel free to reference our earlier reviews of his current Multiracial Family Man podcast and stand up comedy.) This lawyer-turned-comedian has been educating the public for years on everything they didn't realize they should already know about multiracial couples, families, and being the parent of a biracial child. Now, he and his wife Camille have begun releasing videos wherein the two of them provide an entertaining window into their marriage through their banter on su...
