Keeping Up with Comedy's Rising Stars

September 12, 2018

Part improv-er, writer for the New Yorker, and stand up comic, Ayo Edebiri has got it all. So much so, that one has to ask: How in the blazes does she do it?! Usually that level of outcome requires several employees and a reliable cocaine habit... but somehow, Edebiri manages to keep it civil and above board. On the surface at least, it appears that her only vices are with Uniqlo’s finest pair of drape jogger pants and Mark Ruffalo. Seriously though, anyone who has the pleasure of seeing her perform will realize that Edebiri is brilliantly entertaining and that she enjoys her work just as much as those experiencing it.

Ayo Edebiri is fun! There’s just no other way to...

Jacqueline Novak has proven herself as a comedian to be reckoned with. Aside from her exceptional stand up which has gained her a spot on The Tonight Show and The Late Late Show, Novak has dabbled in a number of other artistic mediums. She wrote a book called How to Weep in Public, and has also hosted a web series/talkshow of the same name in which she holds intriguing conversations with family members and fellow funny people such as Lena Dunham. Novak is currently working on her one woman show How Embarrassing for Her, which she is preparing to bring to a number of venues and festivals including the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland.

Novak’s delivery is energetic and erratic....

Derek Gaines (The Last O.G.), and his partner in crime, Monroe Martin (The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon), have teamed up to make a hilarious weekly podcast for your listening pleasure. It is smart, intriguing, current, and most importantly: funny. It’s called No Need For Apologies, and although it’s a guarantee that you won’t be hearing any apologies, you’ll definitely want to thank them for getting together and making this comedy gold!

The dynamic between these two brilliant comedians is really what you stay for once you’ve pressed the play button. Their chemistry is undeniably natural and the conversation flows beautifully from one humorous insult to the next. This mea...

Paris is a tough name to live up to, but this skilful comedian does not disappoint. Paris Sashay is dressed to impress and ready to flaunt some of the finest comedy on the circuit. And, if it’s not her style that gets the attention of the audience, it is definitely her jokes. She has been treating crowds to her comedy stylings in venues like the DC Improv, The Apollo, and The NY Comedy Cellar- to name a few. And, you better believe she’s not gonna stop there!

Once Sashay has the crowd hyped up, she glides into her material and gets people giggling straight off the bat. She may seem chill or even modest, but in reality, she is burning up inside with excitement, anger, and s...

With years of experience under his belt, it’s safe to say that Rashad Bashir knows his way around the New York comedy circuit. He has earned himself some impressive accolades, especially at venues in Harlem. He hosts a weekly open mic at Harlem Nights and also just recently performed at The Apollo. As well as this, Bashir is also the co-creator and producer of a comedy show at Caroline’s which is up for its fifth installment on June 28th. The show is called Better Not Bring Your Kids, but you should definitely bring your buddies because it is AWESOME!

From the moment Bashir steps onstage, it’s impossible to look away and it’s hard to deci...

Brian Enck is a lot like that one substitute teacher you had for 2 weeks in high school that was actually kind of fun. It seems like he doesn’t really care if he fails at his job, but still somehow inspires and makes you laugh uncontrollably. This gifted comedian is no stranger to some of the most popular stand up venues in New York, and he also hosts his own weekly show at Yonkers Comedy Club called Silly Sundays. So, it’s safe to say he knows what he’s doing. Enck finds that sweet spot between energetic and a chilled out delivery, but don’t let his laid back attitude and cheshire grin fool you... this kitty got claws.

Enck likes to test the boundaries wit...

From watching Ian Lara’s social media the past month or so, it’s clear that he’s been working on what was once a mysterious, top secret project. There had been snaps of various camera rigs, lights and green screens all promising something big. Naturally, we wanted to know more so we reached out to Ian and were lucky enough to get an inside look at what he and his team had been working on. We were not disappointed.

What was revealed to us is an app called Out of Tune, a user friendly gameshow designed to be played right from your phone. What sets it apart from being just another game app is that it’s actually a live recording where users play along in real time at the instr...

Anyone who has been to a show that LeClerc Andre has performed at will agree that he stands out from the crowd. No, it’s not just because he’s really tall, nor because he's sporting some of the freshest attire in the standup circuit. It's more likely because everyone can agree that his act is one of the dopest things they’ve seen all night. Since moving to New York to start his stand-up career, LeClerc has hosted a number of comedy nights and played multiple shows at venues throughout the city. So it goes without saying, this is one comedian to keep an eye on.

LeClerc’s style is chilled out and conversational. With a knowing smile, he chuckles now and again...

There is just not enough great things to be said about Gracie Canaan. But to start, she is ruthless, engaging, witty, energetic, incisive, and most importantly: hilarious. Seeing her act is like indulging in a guilty pleasure; you laugh because you know you shouldn’t. Maybe it’s because her material is a little edgy, but that doesn’t matter because she is almost always the butt of her own jokes, which is highly entertaining.

Canaan uses deception to make the audience laugh LOUD. She seems pretty cool and unassuming as she walks onstage and then BAM, you just heard a vagina joke. Very quickly you’ll find out that under that sweet, innocent facade is an arsenal of sharp wit...

Watching Rich Happel perform feels like talking to the cool older brother you always wanted to hang out with. He can be rough at times, but is funny enough to make it worth the wedgies. At first, one might think Happel is a bit too cocky to be funny, or at least seemingly. However, you’re immediately forced to rethink the situation once you hear his self-deprecating humor and raw common sense. As a regular in the New York comedy circuit, he has already proven his worth in iconic clubs like Carolines and Gotham Comedy Club showcasing his unfiltered brilliance, and it’s refreshing to see the level of honesty he incorporates overall.

On stage, Happel...
