Keeping Up with Comedy's Rising Stars

In a city known for its fast-pace and high-tension, Petey DeAbreu is a fresh breath of seriously cool air. The Bronx native has been around for a few years, performing at comedy festivals, on popular stages around the city and on your favorite podcasts and albums, many of which we’ve reviewed here. He’s calm, he’s cool and he’s definitely going to make you laugh.

In addition to snort-inducing hilariousness, DeAbreu is many other things when he performs: unpretentious, unabashed, confident, nonchalant and skilled without-a-doubt. He integrates a perfect blend of straight-face and silly grins, quick and slow tempo, off-the-cuff and well-rehearsed, and executes each one at th...

It’s been about two weeks since the inaugural three-day Janelle James Comedy Festival made its debut and we’re still buzzing. In case you missed it, we’re here to give you the run down.

The three-day long festival showcased performances by some of the biggest names in both up-and-coming and household-name comedy and included the likes of: Black Thought, Petey Deabreu, Liza Treyger, Michelle Buteau, Sydnee Washington, Marie Faustin, David Cross, Judah Friedlander, Matteo Lane, Mia Jackson, Eugene Mirman, Catherine Cohen, Nore Davis, Kate Willett, Kenice Mobely, Yamaneika Saunders, Amy Schumer, and, of course, Janelle James herself. If you skimmed over all those names then h...

The start of this particular week marks a very important week in comedy: it’s the beginning of the first annual Janelle James Comedy Festival at The Bell House in Brooklyn. We spoke about Ms. James some time ago, and since then her expansive comedy grew even larger – we’re here to fill you in.

The Janelle James Comedy Festival continues the comedic-momentum of the decade-long, “sincere-and-ironic” Eugene Mirman Comedy festival, which concluded last December. The Festival spans from Tuesday, December 4th through Thursday, December 6, with each night titled by all-too-relatable names: “Comedians Who Live Nearby,” “Well Who All Goin Be There?” and “Comedians Who Said Sure, I...

On the heels of the release of his third stand-up comedy album titled Too Woke (which will be available on Spotify and Tidal on Black Friday), Nore Davis and New York Comedy Festival presented a new type of party to celebrate. Hosted at a secret location in Brooklyn, the twice-sold-out stand-up comedy album release party featured artwork (and a raffle!) by well-known illustrators from around the country and showcased performances from Damien Lemon, Phoebe Robinson, Petey DeAbreu and Nore Davis himself. If you weren’t there – you missed a heck of a celebration.

Before the show officially began, the crowd was excited. The packed house held a diverse audience that DeAbreu des...

As 2018 begins to wind down, we reflect on the what’s what and who’s who of comedy – and we can certainly say that 2018 has been a good year thus far for New York based writer and comedian, Emmy Blotnick. This year she secured TV spots on Conan, the Late Show and a half hour special on Comedy Central, and if you haven’t seen her yet, it’s safe to say you’ll be seeing a lot more of her soon.

Unlike many comedians, Blotnick isn’t bursting with energy on the stage. She speaks slowly and articulately and smiles through her entire set. She plays on a calm and purposefully awkward yet confident demeanor to deliver unexpected and dark punch lines. Blotnick isn’t afraid to admit t...

If you haven’t heard the name Janelle James before, you simply haven’t been paying attention. She’s toured with household names around the country, she’s been featured on stages in your favorite cities, she has a comedy album out called Black and Mild, she's received awards, TV show credits, major media outlet attention and her resume continues to grow as we speak. Most recently, James was featured in Netflix’s first-ever 15-minute series of standup performances The Comedy Lineup and she’s only just getting started. Establishing her distinctive style across her performances, you’re sure to be seeing a lot more of her.

Without a doubt, James is self-assured. She approaches...

Few things are quite as satisfying as searching far and wide to unearth relatively unknown and very great things across the ever-expanding internet. On Twitter, a space populated by everything from dog photos, politicians, dark thoughts and humor... an up and coming comedian by the name of Dan Pulzello exists.  Guaranteed to brighten up your day and feel a little less alone, Dan Pulzello’s tweets may very well be the voice of a generation.

While most people use Twitter as a space to spout hateful speech, word vomit about their day or cry about how lonely they are (help me), Pulzello uses it to make light of the darkness of life. Often with himself as the but...

When you hear the words “baby shower” you probably think pastels, baby games, bite-sized snacks and a very pregnant woman, right? We’re here to change that. Every Tuesday night, a once monthly but now weekly show, Baby Shower at Grey Lady brings you a much, much better time. Produced by comedians Tobin Miller and Steven Rogers, Baby Shower is consistently packed with well known comedians (some you've even seen on Comedy Central, Conan and The Tonight Show), and is the newest show you should be attending week after week.

Baby Shower feels like one of New York’s best-kept secrets: in the back room of an upscale bar, the intimate setting gives that special speakeasy vibe tha...

You may not know him, but your favorite comedian probably does – actor, writer, prankster and stand-up comedian, Tyler Fischer, has been in the spotlight for quite some time. His resume is more like a laundry list of achievements that most comedians strive for, and ranges from TV appearances (yes, plural) to mentions in the New York Times, and, thankfully, headlining and producing regular comedy shows across New York City. Last week, I attended one of his regularly hosted shows where he inadvertently stole the show.

Out of all the shows he produces and hosts, and among his spots in comedy club lineups, his free monthly show aptly called The Tyler Fischer Comedy Show...

If you didn’t hear the pre-release hype, you’ll surely hear the post-release reviews for Sam Jay’s first comedy album, Donna’s Daughter, that was released on Friday, June 6th. With a slew of impressive credits on her resume, she now adds a telling and laugh-out-loud-in-public comedy album – and we’re here to give you a quick run down.

Donna’s Daughter is more than just a series of funny jokes. Throughout the album, Sam interweaves interludes of personal one-on-one conversations that reveal lesser-known details of her personality and her life. Her casual, off-the-cuff and hilarious on-stage persona is contrasted by moments of confliction and admissions of her once feel...
