Keeping Up with Comedy's Rising Stars

If you’re looking for a comedy show with a community feel, Animal Show has what you need. Hosted by Maya Sharma, David Steele, and Justin Linville, last week’s show featured acts from Edy Modica, Charlie Bardey, Ian Lockwood, Lorelei Ramirez, and Robby Hoffman. Thanks to the hosts and each comic’s distinctive style of comedy, laughter filled the intimate setting throughout the show.

The hosts introduced the show and highlighted their individual personalities and the way in which they mesh together. They created a communal vibe by sharing brief stories from their lives, polling the audience, discussing the birth of Animal Show, and priming the audience for a hysterical show...

Every month, there is a comedy party (and accompanying awesomely designed poster) that you don’t want to miss – Party Time with Sasheer Zamata. Each month Zamata brings together popular comics and music groups to host a mostly-comedy-but-part-variety-show event that never fails to disappoint. Last month, Zamata brought together Emma Willmann, Marina Franklin, Mike Kaplan, Jaqueline Novak, and the musical stylings of DJ Zephyr Ann and The Painted Ladies. On this particular evening, Zamata, Willmann, and Kaplan hosted a mini awards show where audience members revealed a little too much in exchange for free stuff.

Sasheer Zamata hosted with her usual aura of confident a...

On March 18th, Sydnee Washington performed her sold out, one-woman show titled Death of a Bottle Girl at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre. The intimate room was buzzing with Sydnee chatter before the show began and revealed itself to be a star-studded event, brimming with her close friends, well-known comedians, followers, fans, and people she’s worked and performed with over the years. It seemed as though only a few degrees separated everyone in the room as cheerful greetings and excited waves filled the space.

Washington took the stage with the persona of Eulah Jean (a characterization of “eulogy”) to say a few words about the old Bottle Girl version of Sydnee Washington. Dres...

Mom, super woman, and comedian extraordinaire, Aminah Imani is a busy, busy woman. Raised in Atlanta, she brings her hilarity and southern accent to her podcast, Wine Before Nine, and her hosting gig, Uptown Thursdays, in Harlem. She’s been featured in comedy festivals and competitions, on culturally compelling media networks, on a major network produced web series, and on stages that range from Howard University to comedy clubs around New York City. If you haven’t seen her on a lineup or heard her comedy just yet, chances are you will soon.

Imani approaches her stand-up comedy in a very matter-of-fact way. She nonchalantly shares unfiltered and cheeky details from he...

Some time ago, Nore Davis announced that Amazon picked up his new special titled You Guys Are Dope. The special will be released on May 8, 2018, but we got a sneak peak of the unreleased trailer and the inside scoop on the full show. Based on the trailer and his extensive resume, we already know it’s going to be hilarious, but there are a few elements that seem to make You Guys Are Dope stand out from other specials.

The trailer highlights lively conversations between his close friends as well as excerpts from his special, while also expressing his distinctive comedic style – all in just over a minute. It manages to condense the feel of the performance as something more th...

Lately it seems that Stellar Alum and seriously funny lady Marie Faustin has been everywhere. While on hiatus from New York and living her best life in LA for a while, she still managed to deliver her regular content, in addition to new types of content (including launching her official website) that suggest that she’s about to blow up and act like she don’t know nobody (#NewPhoneWhoDis?)

We already know Faustin produces her podcast The Unofficial Expert with bad-ass co-producer Sydnee Washington, but lately she’s been up to some new things:

Faustin recently made Twitter her bi*ch -as if her already hilarious account wasn’t enough, on February 19th she took over infamous co...

Menuhin Hart isn’t just a one-note kind of guy. He’s been spotted on popular comedy club stages, featured on major TV networks, opened for big-name comedians, hosted not one but two podcasts, continuously makes sketch comedy, produces music, and is really, really good at beat boxing.  While he’s undoubtedly a pro at his various crafts, his stand-up comedy stands out as some of his greatest work yet.

It seems that above all, Hart is a budding expert at engaging his audience. On stage, he immediately addresses them and sums up the feel of the crowd – even if there’s some low energy brewing. Throughout his performances, he acknowledges and even pushes back on audience re...

On Friday February 16th, Nore Davis held two sold out shows at Union Hall for the recording of his upcoming album titled Too Woke! He’s got some other deals in the works prior to the album’s official debut sometime early next year, but based on the material he presented, it promises to be a definite hit.

The show opened with material from Aminah Imani. Her delivery was similar to that of Nore’s as she ran through topics all New Yorkers can relate to. Moving from one edgy topic to the next, she warmed up the audience, preparing them for stomach-hurting laughter, and introduced the man of the evening.

As Davis’ album title suggests, the overarching theme of his show poked fun...

The once monthly show ¡Special Tonight! produced by Patrick Holbert and Jeff McBride definitely lives up to its name: Special. The February 9th show, held in the affectionately dubbed “Taco Basement,” formally known as The Mockingbird, showcased performances by Chloe Hilliard, Tyler Fischer, Patrick Holbert, Christina Galston, Jeff McBride, and Nathan Macintosh.  The audience came to the one-of-a-kind show for the VIP line up and all-you-can-eat tacos, and stayed for the non-stop laughter.

Despite each comic’s varying styles and subjects, the theme of the night seemed to highlight the universal pains of dating, the MTA, sex, and shameless honesty.  Host and Native N...

Monthly show Don’t Think Once! at Union Hall showcases local yet accomplished performers wherein the format rotates between stand-up, storytelling, musical comedy, sketch comedy, and improv comedy each month. Produced and hosted by up-and-coming New York comedian, Brandon Collins, the theme isn’t revealed until the show begins, but rest assured, anyone who attends is in for some serious laughs.

The most recent show on February 6th had a storytelling theme and featured comedians Mike Feeney, Justin Brown, Sydnee Washington, Ophira Eisenberg, Menuhin Hart, and Josh Gondelman. While each comedian told stories from their life with widely varying topics, they also showcased th...
